California is on fire. The Climate Crisis and our political resistance to addressing it on an immediate level, has affected the frequency and scale of the fires. In 2018, 1.34 million acres burned in California wildfires. The average number of wildfires (destroying more than 1,000 acres) increased from 140 fires between 1980-1989, to 250 fires between 2000-2012. The average length of California’s wildfire season increased from five months in the early 1970’s, to seven months in 2018.

The three scrolls abstractly depict the level of CO2 in Earth’s atmosphere at three different intervals in the last 419,000 years. A half inch length of paper equates to 1 ppm.
The first scroll (left, 11’ 5.”L) is from 419,328 years ago when the CO2 level measured 277.6 ppm.
The second scroll (middle, 12’ 5”L) is from 1914, when we first breached 300 ppm. Earth’s CO2 measured 301.4 ppm in 1914.
The third scroll (right, 16’ 9”L) is from November 17, 2018, when the C02 level measured 407.98 ppm.
In the last 100 years the level of CO2 increased 106 ppm, whereas it took over 400,000 years for CO2 levels to increase by only 24 ppm.
*Historical carbon dioxide data pulled from the CDIAC Historical Carbon Dioxide Record from the Vostok Ice Core. Current carbon dioxide data pulled from CO2.earth.
